TSAI Yi-Te uses traditional ink painting to convey his observations of modern life. Daydream uses a voyeur’s perspective of women buying clothes. The women are shown taking their selected apparel to the fitting room with joy and apprehension. Most of the canvas is left blank, seemingly covered by white-colored curtains. Behind the curtains, some of the women have found their ideal clothes and are heading out. Others, however, seem to be rather disappointed. The characters are illustrated using draw rubbing techniques and placed against a background of heavy inks to create contrasting dry and wet textures. Once the composition was completed, TSAI Yi-Te provided a footnote at the bottom to guide the viewer’s focus and to encourage them to linger on the blank space, leaving plenty of room for imagination.
