CHANG Hui-Ming’s new media artworks integrate mechanical devices in order to explore conflicting sensations and emotions experienced in modern lifestyles. Swollen Bamboo shows a verdant bonsai of Buddha bamboo floating against a black background. The bonsai was deliberately installed on a motor that rotates the plant while causing it to convulse unnaturally. The Buddha bamboo that symbolized life and rebirth was deprived of natural lighting and air, leading it to exude a deathly aura in addition to its beauteous appearance. CHANG Hui-Ming applies artificial forces and integrates them with plants to create a non-natural setting in an effort to describe the dialectical relationship between technology, nature, death, and art.
