CHANG Hui-Ming’s new media artworks integrate mechanical devices in order to explore conflicting sensations and emotions experienced in modern lifestyles. The video artwork of Rose shows a blooming rose bonsai floating against a black background. The bonsai was deliberately placed on a motor that rotates the potted plant while causing it to convulse unnaturally. Weak artificial lighting projected upon the rose also replaced natural illumination, exuding a sense of death in addition to the outwardly beauty of the flowers. CHANG Hui-Ming applies artificial forces and integrates them with plants to create a non-natural setting in an effort to describe the dialectical relationship between technology, nature, death, and art.
