CHIU Kuo-Fon employs new types of media in Chinese landscape paintings to create a unique mixture of traditions and novel features. Unrestrained by media and forms, CHIU Kuo-Fon was able to break through the boundaries of traditional landscape paintings and create a modern sanctuary for inner feelings and desires. Return to Mountain is a single work composed of 5 component panels. Brush, ballpoint pens, and markers were used to create a landscape, generating uniform lines and a manga-like visual vocabulary instead of the wrinkles, rubs, or spreads of traditional ink paintings. The large numbers of horizontal lines also form the elements of modern abstract art. Captions and descriptions written on the right side of the work, however, are still written with traditional calligraphy brushes.
