HSU Meng-Han uses meticulous and detailed illustrations in order to convey the sense of poetic loneliness and sadness experienced prior to passing away. Futile Struggle to Hang on to the Elapsed 5/5 shows the emotional journey resulting from physical pain. A shorthaired girl wearing pajamas is shown reclining weakly against the wall. Paintings on the wall show pictures of butterflies, a fetus, and internal organs as a metaphor for the desires for recovery that sick people wish to receive. The room has two doors, one large and one small, symbolizing the heart’s desire to escape from the situation. The artist has treated the body as a vessel for holding life, and this vessel would be subject to external forces and collisions and must accept all aspects, no matter how imperfect of life.
