HSU Meng-Han’s piece titled His Beauty Only Lasted Till Last Night 02 is composed of two small paintings. In one of the paintings, there’s a figure clothed in white, whose pale hands are carefully cradling a butterfly, as if cherishing the fragile life in her hands. In the other, several butterflies are scattered on the ground, looking as if they have lost their life force. The pale, ashen human figure contrasts starkly with the brightly colored butterfly. The butterfly in the figure’s hands and those scattered on the ground pronounce the persistence and extinguishment of life. In this piece, Hsu conveys her thoughts and feelings on the topic of death, from fear and resistance to an acceptance of the perfections and imperfections of life; it’s a realization of the poetry and solitude of the final moments of life.
