CHANG Ching-Wen uses glue painting to depict urban spaces in order to express the isolation and helplessness of modern life. Oasis I illustrates a convenience store ubiquitous in Taiwan’s residential areas. CHANG Ching-Wen has utilized meticulous brushwork in order to realistically depict the appearance of residential blocks as well as a convenience store located at the first floor on the corner of the street. Just across a narrow alleyway, one can see another convenience store from a competing brand. CHANG Ching-Wen believes that the limitless expansion of convenience stores has indirectly conditioned people to such lifestyles and made them unable to escape from this dependence. This work thus serves as a critique on the preposterous phenomenon of modern life.
