WANG Ming-Ren makes use of ink painting to recreate a faded moment once captured in an old photograph. In Afternoon Tea, a single shade was used to generate a scene of an old coffee shop. Like a film negative, we can see glimpses of the lavish and classical interior decor, customers enjoying their coffee by the bar, and the barista engaging in delightful conversations with other guests. WANG Ming-Ren has deliberately recreated this patchy picture to instill a sense of nostalgia. Since old photographs are no longer easily reproducible and are increasingly rare, WANG Ming-Ren thus attempted to duplicate these old photographs by hand to highlight their value and invoke the valuable memorials acquired from our younger days.
