Chinese ink painter CHENG Fu-Cheng was born in Ershui Town, Changhua County in Taiwan. Since he was a child, CHENG Fu-Cheng has been a friend of nature and his paintings have been deeply influence by his upbringing in the countryside. This piece, Live in the Mountains of that Period of Time, depicts a wooded mountain scene. In this magnificently beautiful and bright painting, an imposing mountain range is enveloped by clouds and mist, the trees and vegetation only dimly visible, as if being seen in the hazy moonlight. The artist has randomly arranged light, natural brush strokes and large blocks of ink to depict the leisurely and pleasant life in the mountains. CHENG Fu-Cheng believes that landscape painting should be based on a sincere respect and reverence but that it should free itself from traditional Chinese literati forms and techniques and express the untrammeled feelings and imagination of the creative artist.
