Chinese ink painter CHENG Fu-Cheng was born in Ershui Town, Changhua County in Taiwan. Here the folk customs are simple and honest and the town abounds in human kindness. Since he was a child, CHENG Fu-Cheng has been a friend of nature and his paintings have been deeply influence by his upbringing in the countryside. This piece, Hometown Sunset, depicts a hometown scene with great poetic sensitivity. The artist first sketches a recognizable drawing in light, natural ink lines and then from the actual houses he extracts color and line so that the hometown scene wanders between the concrete and the abstract. The heavy ink in the painting expresses the coolness of sunset and the bright red color embellishes the tiled roofs of the houses, emphasizing the warmth of “home.” The brisk and flowing lines and layering in the painting mitigate the contrast of coldness and warmth so that the painting projects a sense of movement and expresses the artist’s feelings during the creative process.
