Artwork Appreciation
HUANG Pei-Ju’s works started with the sensation of “light,” emulating and transforming afterimages to re-imagine the potential possibilities of artistic illustrations. In Keep Looking 03, HUANG Pei-Ju used ballpoint pens and acrylic paint to turn light spots into colorful ink splotches, forming radiating beams of light upon a background of numerous shades of white. HUANG Pei-Ju uses brushstrokes to hide the original light sources to create a scene based on reality yet wholly alien in appearance. Unlike conventional photography and digital painting, HUANG Pei-Ju has created a novel visual moment that can only be generated via drawing.
This strange, blurred, and isolated composition portrays light bodies flickering weightlessly upon an urban landscape devoid of buildings or horizons, providing an artwork of poetic visual sensations that revolutionizes our pre-conceptions about drawing and optical studies.
