Artwork Appreciation
HUANG Wei-Min was born in Puli, Nantou County. In this beautiful town, issues of land development and environmental protection continue to be fiercely debated. “Engulfing” is one of the paintings in the “Devour” series she created in 2008, which focused on issues of environment and development. For food and survival, and entertainment and recreation, men continue to develop higher into the mountains and deeper into the forests, opening tunnels and building highways, as if slitting the nature over and over again. In Huang Wei-Min’s paintings, mountain and forest transform into monsters, seemingly quiet and gentle, shouldering the needs and greed of men. However, having been hurt over time, these monsters are now showing capability to fight back.
