Artwork Appreciation
TSAI Yi-Chieh uses painting to create worlds that do not really exist as she pursues her search for a refuge from reality. Somewhere Out There II-01 shows a divided composition, with two rooms furnished with a window and a painting respectively. Both the window and painting depict a beauteous, natural landscape that corresponds with the exquisite indoor environment. However, the deliberately dissected window scenery and painting create an abrupt end and a sense of incompleteness. The artist attempts to show a fleeting sense of well-being in an artificial fantasy, conveying the sense of emptiness and detachment experienced after imagining the beauty of other places.
