Artwork Appreciation
YAN Yi-Cheng makes a habit of deriving aesthetic nourishment from Chinese calligraphy, silk crafts and landscaping, and applying modern painting techniques to create work that blends Chinese and Western elements.
In Catalog of Flourishing Flowers A, he observes the natural appearance of grass and flowers, and with flowing brushstrokes and a simplified, semi-abstract tone, he transforms this natural scene into opulent artistic language. His painting style distills order from complexity. The image, seemingly a random doodle, can be subjectively interpreted as flowers and grass, or as mountains and rocks.
Yan attempts to construct a style partway between the abstract and the concrete, giving the viewer the chance to take a free, unobstructed mental journey within the image.
