Artwork Appreciation
CHEN Jian-Rong is fond of depicting imagined cityscapes. Acrylic paints are his primary medium, through which he conjures up structural spaces with paintbrush and ruler and develops unique abstract scenes.
Landscape 60 is composed of well-executed interlocking lines. Indistinct, partial forms of buildings appear in the scene, marked with seemingly haphazardly placed splotches of color and drips of paint, presenting memories of urban life that shuttle back and forth in Chen’s mind.
Chen’s creative work gives the viewer a sense of uncertainty. In an unembellished style, he purposely layers lines and colors to put the piece in a seemingly complete yet uncompleted state, thereby conveying his anxious feelings of uncertainty amid an environment in space and time that is full of change.
