Artwork Appreciation
CHANG Yung-Ta’s works include audio, visual, experimental sound systems, installation, and real performances. His works portray minute everyday changes in graphical format and focus on sounds and phenomena that are often ignored. Hyper.Data-N°2 (Hyper.Data-N°2a [Diagram], Hyper.Data-N°2b [Hex Binary-Raw Data]) is composed of two parts. The first is the data recorded by over a thousand observation stations during the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake of March 11th to portray the rational and accurate depiction of data readings made by observation instruments. In the other half of the composition, CHANG Yung-Ta overlaps these readings upon the same plane to help viewers understand the fact that the earthquake is not simply markings generated by the observation stations, but a phenomenon felt by all observations stations at the same time. This rational processing of scientific technology leads viewers to employ their emotions when thinking about scientific observation and how such readings are ultimately derived for the purpose of human existence.
