Artwork Appreciation
Artist CHEN Yi-Chieh has long paid attention to the association among technology, media and life. Her work, “Speedy Flight” features the most popular carton, Spongebob Squarepants as the theme. This work consists of several sculptures of colorful concentric circles. The colors of the concentric circles are not randomly chosen but based on the colors and the proportion in the cartoon characters, which are re-simplified into colorful shapes of concentric circles. The funning part is that we can associate the colors with the characters. For example, we associate the yellow color with Spongebob Squarepants, the pink color with Patrick Star and orange-red color with Krusty Krab. The artist redefines the cartoon characters through the rupture between concrete profile and abstract patterns.
