Artwork Appreciation
HUANG Pei-Ju’s works are based upon the subject of “light,” using it to simulate and transform afterimages and generating new possibilities of art in the digital age.
In Keep Looking 02, HUANG Pei-Ju uses ballpoint pens and acrylic paint in order to transform light spots into ink spots, turning the darkness of night into the white of bright daylight. HUANG Pei-Ju uses brushstrokes to hide the original light sources to create a scene based on reality yet wholly alien in appearance. Unlike conventional photography and digital painting, HUANG Pei-Ju has created a novel visual moment that can only be generated via drawing.
This strange, blurred, and isolated composition portrays light bodies flickering weightlessly upon an urban landscape devoid of buildings or horizons, providing an artwork of poetic visual sensations that revolutionizes our pre-conceptions about drawing and optical studies.
