Artwork Appreciation
LIN Cheng’s ink works Holiukan (1), (2), (3) was inspired by Fan Kuan’s Travelers Among Mountains and Streams. Extremely long scrolls of canvases create a perspective that maximizes strength and power. Spatial layout employed concepts of planar distance, depth, and height described in KUO Hsi’s Lin Chuan-Kao zhi Ji as well as the visual language of suspended distance that was independently created by Lin Cheng to create a work that reflects the mental state of a modern individual. Blank backgrounds gave freedom to the mountains, woods, trees, rocks, and other traditional landscape painting elements. The viewing angle focuses upon the floating poses of the characters, with the central panel giving a powerful and dynamic presentation of the virtual character of a Super Sayan prepared to unleash the move known as Kamehameha. Lin Cheng has integrated traditional ink painting with the Japanese manga theme of Dragon Ball, taking on traditional art styles with a novel approach to create a personal world of fantasy.
