Under the Pandemic: The Metaphor of Virus and Others
2020/07/29 Exhibition

If we look back in human history, there were numerous destructive pandemic every other decade or hundreds of years, including the Plague of Athens , the Black Death, smallpox and measles, and the 1918 flu pandemic…etc. But changing ecosystem and blurred boundaries of species lead to outbreak of more diseases never seen before, such as AIDS, SARS, avian flu, Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever, and COVID-19. All those diseases have caused global panic and enormous numbers of death, indicating a continuous competition between human beings and viruses. Consequently, pandemic becomes part of our life.

More than medical issues, pandemic has metaphors in political, economic and cultural fields. This exhibition is themed “Under the Pandemic,” featuring five subjects of metaphor: "Globalization", "Mobility and Infection", "Prejudice and Loneliness of Others", "Surveillance and Quarantine" and "Symbiosis". It aims to discuss how contemporary art embodies these five metaphors and keywords. Seeing how artists explain the suffering caused by disease through creating artworks, art itself may not specifically point out all details of epidemic infection or the sickness, but indirectly transform them into fear of death, loneliness and helplessness. In the exhibition, we can also rethink the relationship between people and others, humans and the environment or animals, reminding us of our original intention.
