Artist Yen Yu-Ting’s “Screenshot” series consists of paintings created by capturing various news items she collects daily, much like computer screenshots. Screenshot-2 features a human-shaped target modeled after a young man in black seen in news footage, as well as an animal engulfed in flames and symbols resembling a scrolling text display around the painting. The artist makes good use of the inherent texture of Yunlong paper, complemented by a thin layer of gouache, to imbue the painting with a rich sense of depth. The distorted patterns in the blocks of black on either side represent her experimentation with ink wash techniques. Using a slightly dry brush dipped in ink, Yen Yu-Ting repeatedly dry-rubs the brush, creating a sense of space and illustrating the mental processes that occur when absorbing a flood of information. Through the composition, ink wash techniques, color design, and other techniques, the artist expresses the restless emotions of modern people living in an age of information explosion.
