Artist Lin Jia-Yi views her work as a way of documenting the “footprints” of people and events in daily life. On overcast but dry days, sunlight penetrates the balcony and creates unique patterns of light and shadow indoors. Lin Jia-Yi is fascinated by capturing scenes with this kind of light and shadow, and through her intuitive interpretation and combination of them, she depicts them in painting. The title of this work marks this specific moment in time, a frozen “present.” The painting is dominated by large areas of blue, calm and restrained. She uses abstract geometric shapes and lines to piece together remembered images, which may be the light shining into a corner of the studio, or the light and shadow filtered through frosted glass. Some blocks of color present a sense of flowing water waves, while others are like the still deep night sky. Together they weave a landscape of poetic memory.
