The main themes of artist Lin Jia-Yi’s creations are remembered people and events; slices of memory and the perception of time have always been important elements in her works. One afternoon, when Lin was sitting alone in her studio, she sensed the movement of the wind and the shifting of the sun’s rays and of the shadows cast by various objects. She then simplified the scene, eliminating things until only lines and colors were left in a purely abstract form—and so this work was created. She used her intuition while reconstructing the space of her studio with blocks of color. She sprayed mineral pigments on the paper in a fine mist, and the red color represents her mood at the time. In each painting, the present moment becomes the artist’s integration of memories, even as she recalls the past once again and uses this to present unrealistic ideals that she strives to maintain.
