The theme of artist Lin Jia-Yii’s artworks mainly revolves around the traces of memories of dealing with other people. She reconstructs a current image by transforming it into lines and colors, simplifying and removing superfluous objects, and leaving only pure forms. 14:15 depicts how the sunlight streamed into her studio one afternoon and illuminated even the shadows cast by the furniture and other objects. Clouds and wind outside also caused subtle changes of light and shadow. She reduces her daily observations down to combinations of geometric blocks, while her handling of the colors is intuitive. Here, blues and grays, plus a line of red, represent her mood. The artist chose to paint with gouache, which requires a long period of time to prepare, in response to her intended theme of “the layering of time.” She sprayed the paint on the paper in a mist, and the foil she used will gradually change color over time—which also reflects time’s inexorably forward process.
