Pratyekabuddha, a transliteration of the Sanskrit word, refers to a Buddhist saint who attains enlightenment through self-cultivation. These individuals practice in isolation, not spreading the dharma or leading any disciples. Artist Li Yan Wei’s creative themes primarily revolve around small everyday moments, as well as stories and music that touch him. His works are spontaneous and intuitive, with rich and unrestrained colors. This work was inspired by the story of a Pratyekabuddha who achieved enlightenment on his own. Because Li Yan Wei is interested in Tibetan thangkas, his work features symmetrical compositions and vibrant colors similar to those found in thangkas. The three Pratyekabuddhas in the center of the painting are seated in a water pipe used to smoke marijuana. In the clouds above, there are Pratyekabuddhas holding pipes or sitting on mythical beasts. The artist has pieced together these various elements in the painting to present his imagined free and peaceful paradise.
