To understand artist Hsieh Jung-Wei’s work, it is helpful to begin by exploring his creative process. Imagine where the first brushstroke of a painting would land. Hsieh Jung-Wei describes the creative process as similar to bricklaying, stacking things in an orderly fashion from bottom to top. His past experience as an architectural graduate student imbues the seemingly simple geometric blocks of color in this work with the subtle shapes of architectural walls or cylinders. He uses clear water to smudge lines, and the way the pigment diffuses and changes color as the water touches and spreads it creates a delicate chromatic effect. The blue ink, diluted with water, decomposes into a gradient of hues, sometimes with a hint of purple-red, other times a soothing blue-green. Hsieh Jung-Wei’s creative style has evolved from his early focus on filling the surface to his current approach, which uses more white space and smudged colors to create softer outlines. This allows the ink to not only emit a subtle glow, but also imbue it with the calmness and delicacy of ink painting.
