The ballpoint pen is a contemporary tool for everyday writing, but it is also Hsieh Jung Wei’s main creative medium. He attempts to use writing tools to find new creative possibilities in contemporary calligraphy and painting. Hsieh’s creations are completed with careful, rational planning. This work uses mathematical geometric relationships to configure countless triangles so as to create a balance in the composition. Each triangle is composed of countless vertical line segments, drawn by him with a black rollerball pen (that is, a ballpoint pen using water-based ink), stroke by stroke. Before “writing,” he would first wet the paper with a brush, so that after making his pen lines, the black lines would spread and “bleed,” creating a foggy texture. This technique brings unexpected variables to the rational order, so that the flat geometric structures begin to show an optical illusion of three dimensions. Some people think that Hsieh Jung Wei’s works belong to the minimalist style, but actually it is a wonderful process of going “from complexity to simplicity” through endless writing.
