Artist Lee Yi-Ya’s work consistently revolves around the representation of space, dismantling the scenes found on rental websites and in interior design magazines to reconstruct an imaginary conception of “home.” He incorporates symbols from art history into this work, such as an apple from a Cézanne still life placed on a chair and a print of German artist Gerhard Richter’s Reading hanging next to a bookcase. In the foreground, you can see three chairs, which appear in a representative work by the symbolic conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth, which refers to a three-layered comparison consisting of the “real entity of the chair,” the “image of the chair,” and the “dictionary definition of a chair.” Li Yi-Ya not only demonstrates the concept of “multiple deconstructions” in his paintings, but also uses oil pastels to create a carpet-like texture on paper. The empty chairs represent an invitation, while chairs marked by books hint at human presence, injecting subtle human warmth into the slightly alienating space.
