“Insects Awaken” also known as Jingzhe, is one of the twenty-four seasonal nodes on the traditional solar calendar. During winter, hibernating creatures awaken into the soil. As spring approaches and the first thunder sounds, these creatures awaken, signaling the earth’s return to vitality. Artist Lee Yi-Hsuan’s sculpture Insects Awaken depicts the initial sounding of spring thunder, when insects wake up and crawl out from under the dark soil, full of energy. Lee Yi-Hsuan’s works are deeply influenced by the aesthetics of traditional ink painting. She places great emphasis on the movement and resonance of qi, striving to make her works vivid and expressive. The hollow design gives the work a sense of lightness, while the black soil resembles splashing water and blooming flowers. The soft, curved, and outward-extending shape seems full of movement. Above the soil, there are golden butterflies and rhinoceros beetles spreading their wings and preparing to fly. This is the work’s finishing touch: it condenses the moment when the insects are just about to fly off, which adds to the work’s vitality.
