Artist Chen Fei-Hao is good at using text, conceptual photography, and dynamic images to interpret various issues deriving from history, culture, and social change. His work Hae-eo-hwa Shinjū is a video installation interweaving Taiwanese chanting performances, news and historical materials, and historical image archives with experimental sound. Chen Fei-Hao adapted the Japanese wife-murder incident known as the “Keelung House No. 7 Murder” that occurred during the period of Japanese rule in the 1930s into a virtual story, “Love Song of a Korean Song Girl in the Port of Keelung,” and asked the pioneering teacher Chou Ting-Pang to transform it into a Taiwanese song performance. Using this virtual story as a starting point, it further explores the rarely mentioned issue of Korean song girls in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation period. The work explores Taiwan’s past history through the presentation of traditional Taiwanese chanting songs, rich in strong emotions, as well as literature and images, while incorporating imagination and thinking across eras and ethnic groups.
