作品賞析
The artist Chen Fei-Hao is skilled at interpreting social, cultural, and historical issues through diverse media such as text, moving images, and photography. His video works, Strange Tale of the Bridal Fan and Eiren’s Fan reinterpret the modern literary fiction that the Japanese writers Satō Haruo and Nishikawa Mitsuru left to Taiwan through singing it in song form in Hokkien. The works present the content of the two stories, and they are played at the same time in the same space, but reedited and performed by the Hokkien Singing Troupe. The two stories present the exotic beauty of Taiwan through the eyes of colonists, and their feelings of separation after the war. Chen Fei-Hao uses the image of the “fan” to subtly link them, using local language and traditional art to show the new perspective of the colonists’ outward gaze, and leading viewers to re-explore the fan’s meaning in Taiwanese literature.
