The work Countryside: Hakka Village in Taiwan is a mosaic depicting Hakka village scenes that the artist Chiang Kai-Chun recalls from his childhood. He based his composition on photographs of actual scenes, then used undyed natural stone inlays to construct the image. Chiang used a “reverse production” technique—he placed the mosaic face down on the table, cemented it, and pressed a wooden board on it to ensure that the front of the work was completely flat. This work combines realism and abstraction. The sky is made of pink and orange stones to show the afterglow of sunset. The dots in the sky are flying birds in the distance. Geometric, abstracted plants on the right may look painted but are still mosaic. It is an interesting rural scene, with distant mountains in the middle ground, and the townhouses showing the appearance of a Hakka settlement. Chiang Kai-Chun hopes his work depicting Taiwan’s unique rural scenes will resonate more with viewers.
