In Multiverse Travel, artist Tsai Yi-Ju drew the cartoon characters that accompanied him through many of his childhood memories—Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck—and reinterpreted them by disassembly and reinterpretation of their colors, textures, and structures. The flying dinosaur makes the painting even more childlike. The black lines in the background (not the outlines of the cartoon figures) resemble ink and wash patterns, as the artist internalized his early experiences of studying ink painting. The composition is full of tension due to the combination of cartoon outlines and lines with the inkbrush quality. Tsai believes that the human brain often displaces people, things, and objects from different times and places as it weaves them together to form seemingly complete memories. He hopes that viewers can follow their imaginations with the cartoon characters and travel through other times and spaces. A small figure on a skateboard in the lower left corner hints at the freedom and carefreeness of the past.
