Tsai Yi-Ju, the artist, is adept at creating paintings in which abstraction and figuration are blended, showing a unique painterly tension. This work, Love for You, is based on his childhood memories. When his parents were busy working and could not be with him, the cartoons on TV became his companions when he was alone. Doraemon was a cartoon popular at the time for its distinctive characters and images. Even though he was too young to fully understand the plots at the time, he could still feel nervous or laugh out loud as the plots unfolded. The various props in Doraemon’s pouch of gadgets also filled him with anticipation and surprise. Based on these memories, he used collage to create a composition that wanders between the figurative and the surreal, and he adds a hand with a “love finger” gesture where Doraemon’s pouch is usually placed. Through the painterly expression of composition, colors, shapes, textures, and brushstrokes, he creates rich visual layers and rhythms, so that the painting is filled with a childlike atmosphere and a romantic touch.
