作品賞析
Artist Huang Wan-Ling specializes in printmaking and ink painting, and these two works were inspired by the scenery she saw while traveling in Jeju Island, South Korea. Nikawa glue (cow skin glue) was originally used as a blending agent in Eastern gouache paintings, but Huang created a new technique in which she uses this glue to outline various lines and details of a picture, and then uses ink wash or overlay, which creates intaglio, blank space, and rubbing effects like those seen in prints. Although this composition includes two pictures taken from the same scene, Huang used concepts similar to those of intaglio and relief carving to express them. On the left side, she repeatedly layered the image with a fine brush, and on the right side, she emphasized the light, sketchy feeling caused by the use of ink bleeds. Looking carefully at the figures in two paintings, one sees the same older man sitting on a stone in each painting, while Korean women in bright, fluorescently colored sportswear represent the tourists coming and going. She leaves a strong visual impression in the photonegative-like paintings.
