In Chinese society, puns are often used in connection with seeking good luck or good omens of wealth. The word “five oranges” (or in Chinese, wu ju) in the work Five Oranges, Flower 02 puns with the word for “rich” in Taiwanese. The artist Huang Shun-Ting used imaging software to re-edit images that were full of wealth-promoting connotations, projected them onto canvas, and started to paint. The golden oranges in the painting highlight the theme of “inviting wealth.” The five oranges are neatly arranged along the diagonal, while the lily flowers below seem to be firmly separated from the bows and oranges above them. Huang applies the acrylic paint to the canvas in a thin layer, in a way that conceals the individual brushstrokes. What he copied was not oranges or flowers, but the combination of color bits on the digital screen. He uses humor and jokes to raise another discussion on “What is art?”
