“If you could decide how fast time passes, how would you feel about time?” Alan Lightman’s novel Einstein’s Dreams describes how the experience of different “speeds” of time affects people’s emotions and behaviors. Its method of deepening and exploring the same theme repeatedly in different chapters is similar to artist Huang Ting-Yu’s idea of simply presenting the different beauties and characteristics of gouache in her creations. She focused on two stories from the book and added her own interpretations to them, transforming them into the four paintings of Above Time—Einstein’s Dreams. She experimentally mixed pastels with fabrics, embroidery, stitching, and other media when creating her minimalist images. The abstract style brings out the qualities of each medium, but the different flow rates of time described in the book are brought out through their combination, which makes it possible for the beauty of the gouache to be expressed in each panel. It lets each viewer explore their own interpretation of time.
