The Heat is On

The Heat Is On is an acrylic painting by artist Chen Yu-Kai. He is good at using the technique of applying the acrylic paint thickly in places in order to layer the colors and make them seem as if they are floating on the canvas. It gives these places a sense of presence. In this work, Chen drew from his own observations from surfing, as well as his knowledge of volcanic activity and clouds in nature, and he used blocks of fluid color to depict the visual effects of the weather being so hot that everything melts. After a random process of repeatedly overlaying colors formed a pattern that vaguely suggested a human figure with a head and hands, the artist then gave it a helpless, naive smile, as if to suggest that we can only confront very hot and unbearable conditions with a smile and a gentle attitude.
