Disappearance and temporality have always been the core themes of Artist Shiu Sheng-Hung’s artworks. Deep Time, Mountains, Seas, Islanders is the fourth work in his series, “The Glacial Landscape.” “Deep time” expresses a geological concept of time, derived from the observation of nature and geographic strata. Inspired by the postcards that he had collected as well as the glaciers, trees, and rocks that he saw during his many hikes, he extended his imagination to the scenery before him through layers of oil, acrylic, and pigment that he applied to the canvas, with layering and scraping for effect. The composition is divided into several parts, including some distant views and some that are partial enlargements of particular objects. Together they present a picture that is both abstract and representational, yet fully embodying his views on time and memory. Apart from the oil and acrylic, the artist selected more natural pigments, which not only made him more interested in the history of their development and improvement, but also reflected his own way of becoming more eco-friendly.
