Rhône Glacier is the twelfth of Artist Shiu Sheng-Hung’s “The Glacial Landscape” series, which comes from old postcards that he collected, as well as his own experiences of traveling and mountaineering in high-latitude countries. He captures how these seemingly eternal glaciers still change and can disappear as he extends his imagination on the scenery he creates. When creating, Shiu Sheng-Hung continues to study about glaciers and related areas of geology and biogeography. He selects oil and acrylic paints as well as natural mineral pigments, then layers them on and sometimes scrapes them, to bring out the brushstrokes, colors, and textures. Long concerned thematically with the ideas of “vanishing” and “temporality,” Shiu uses a unique visual vocabulary to express passing time and memory. From his observations of the environment, he presents his way of getting along with it, bringing endless room for the viewer’s imagination.
