SHIU Sheng-Hung’s The Entrance provides a landscape painting that investigates photo realism and reconstruction. Landscape photographs taken from different angles are used and re-assembled to create the landscape painting. What seems to be a single piece of art is actually a montage of multiple sections. Symbolic lighting as well as natural blue, white, and green hues are used to build the landscape. Scraping and smudging techniques of painting are then used to provide a fuzzy image as though affected by signal distortion or the passage of time. Despite living in a place bounded by the ocean on all sides, SHIU Sheng-Hung happens to be extremely unfamiliar with the sea. The reconstruction of the island landscape provides a visible and obscure image by which one can better learn about the locale.
