作品賞析
Artist Chiu Chien-Jen often uses large quantities of cold-toned oil paints and blurry images to express the “alienation of urban life.” A Corner in My Mind shows three black figures walking against an abstract background composed mostly of interlacing black and white horizontal lines, which represent a non-specific time and place. Although the three figures’ body movements are shown in silhouette, they are quite vivid. Two are walking with their heads down, and two are carrying bags. Against the blurred background, the figures seem to be “walking in” or “walking out” of a certain scene, giving the viewer a sense of familiarity but uncertainty. The black and white paint naturally flows downwards, so it blends with the silhouetted figures, which not only gives an added criss-cross layering to the image but also symbolizes how the people are intertwined with their time and space. Chiu Chien-Jen cleverly uses the black-white contrast and the intersecting lines to give the entire work a strong visual impact.
