The artist Chiu Chien-Jen takes the life around him as his creative theme. After each journey to a different place, he will revisit it through the pictures he has taken along the way, and chooses the images that can project his emotions even though the details of the scenes might not be clearly remembered. These are reorganized through partial collage and converted to oil paint. Just a Story is a scene full of stories. It is based on images taken while he was on the platform of a train station overseas, waiting for a train. The person waiting for the train on the opposite platform corresponded to the artist’s own situation as a traveler. Waiting for a train or bus—this is something reflected in everyone’s life experience, and it is often used as a metaphor for waiting for the next stage of one’s life. He deliberately removes clues that would enable identification of the station platform, erases the colors, and presents a fluid, blurred image, so that the painting depicts an urban scene that seems already vaguely familiar to us, but there is room for interpretation. Viewers are encouraged to project themselves into it as a part of their own lived experiences, which then become the stories of this work.
