Chiu Chien-Jen, the artist, takes the life around us as the main theme for his creations.He uses photography to capture the things he sees in daily life and travel, then mixes these images into landscapes that are both real and illusory, to show the idea that “Images are not just images, and paintings are not just paintings.” His Stranger in My Mind uses oil paint repeatedly layered on and removed, so that many images and different moments are compressed into the composition. He uses “low chromaticity” to present the cool, indifferent atmosphere among urban dwellers. The figures appear as silhouettes against a mostly light background, and the flowing shapes present a sense of alienation and instability. In addition, the artist explores the influence of “images” on the lives of young people in our information-filled society. He also attempts to find a visual balance between images and paintings: many images are constantly vanishing or getting covered up, like the ghostly figures in the painting, always on the move with their broken shapes.
