Most of Lin Yi-Chi’s artworks are videos, experimental films, and video installations that interpret the discrete experiences and memories of families and ethnic groups within a historical context, but reality and life experiences are also mixed with dreams and reinterpreted in a unique style. Lin’s Requiem for the Dream of Father is presented in five chapters. In this film, she wears a skull mask that symbolizes her father’s death, and she returns to the fantastic memories of being with her father when she was a child. In the film, she recounts her childhood dreams and memories and reflects on the historical ghosts from the martial law period as she presents the period’s social atmosphere, the scenes of military dependents’ villages, the dangwai movement, and the way young people looked at the time. Lin uses a large number of scene cuts and sudden pop-ups of hazy, blurred scenes of past memories. Through a ritual reenactment of her father’s funeral, she achieves a two-way pacification of souls—her father’s, and her own.
