Most of Lin Yi-Chi’s artworks are videos, experimental films, and video installations that interpret the discrete experiences and memories of families and ethnic groups within a historical context. For her Group Portrait of the Echoers, she wrote a song in four languages—Chinese, Japanese, English, and Taiwanese—telling about the victims of human rights oppression in the past, and she invited four local Green Island residents to act as workers in the Green Island White Terror Memorial Park, who take turns singing songs to send off the victims. The inspiration for this work came from her field research at Green Island, when she discovered that victims who were imprisoned there would ask the people around them to send them off by singing their favorite songs. Through these performances by Green Island residents and the surrounding video installation, she creates echoes of the historical memory of the White Terror period and pays tribute to the oppressed souls of the past.
