Most of Lin Yi-Chi’s artworks are videos, experimental films, and video installations that interpret the discrete experiences and memories of families and ethnic groups within a historical context, but reality and life experiences are also mixed with dreams and reinterpreted in a unique style. Her Doppelganger is based on a family story. It tells of a pair of twins, a boy and a girl, born in Kinmen, and the two were forced to separate due to the war. The brother emigrated to Indonesia, the sister lived in Taiwan, and the three generations of the family lived in different places. Lin uses cinematic scene transitions and theater-like backdrop changes to narrate the changes in the lives of three generations of family members. The three-generation family may have come from the same ancestral home, but after going through so many changes, its members have grown up in two very different environments—Indonesia and Taiwan—so there are significant differences of “identity” among the three generations.
