作品賞析
The artist Liang Chen-Ming presents his White Rock Wall in the form of a hanging scroll. It shows the deep and varied textures of the cliffs of Taroko Gorge, one of Taiwan’s most beautiful spots. The rock wall rises until it finally disappears in the hazy white mist at the top of the painting, thus hinting at even grander heights. Liang does not paint panoramic views of majestic mountainous scenery or the kind of secluded landscapes favored in literati painting. He favors depicting Taiwanese landscapes instead, and here he focuses on the rocks towering above a stream deep in the gorge. The “white rock” of the title is actually marble, which is quite common in the gorge. Under the natural effects of long-term erosion, the rocks in the gorge have a wonderful, rich appearance, and so they have become the symbol of Taroko under the artist’s brush. He chose and applied the “mineral pigments” in a way that the rocks are not just plain white, but varied and interesting.
