ome of the earliest signs of human culture are cave paintings and stone tools. For the artist Chang Feng Ming, “stone is a carrier of human civilization and world culture,” and combined the elements of ink painting to develop a unique “stone man” motif that reoccurs in his works. The work Stone.Tell has a circle in a rectangular frame, which represents the traditional Chinese cosmology of a round heaven and square earth. It uses meticulous brushwork, various tonalities of ink and distinctive imagery to carefully outline an image existing only in the heart. Inside the circle, there are rocky mountains in a calm, self-contained atmosphere. A few rocks in the foreground look like Chang’s “stone men,” with their backs toward the viewer. Meanwhile, outside the circle, we see the kind of pebbles often found on the seashore as well as Taihu rocks, which are often used in Chinese gardens. The contrast makes this a landscape filled with the artist’s unique ideas.
