Chang Feng-Ming is good at combining portraits and landscapes. Secluded, however, is an ink landscape on paper that combines the natural scenery of two places in Japan. There is an immense waterfall, and in the foreground there are volcanic rocks with a wide variety of unusual shapes. Through the accumulation of many lines of varying degrees of thickness or fineness, he creates a landscape with a highly distinctive appearance. Chang Feng-Ming has long focused on the relationship between people and stone. He believes that stone has always been an important material through history, used to make tools, containers, and buildings; it is a carrier of world culture. Focusing on this, he developed what appear to be images of petrified human figures. With extremely meticulous ink painting techniques, he created figures that had the apparent texture of stones but resembled human forms. In this way, he transformed his landscapes in a way that resulted in a unique style, with his own visual vocabulary.
